Our club organized a trip to the Ohrid lake in Macedonia.
The excursion started on august 17th (Saturday) and last for 9 days (till august 25th).
We dove on dive sites near the town of Ohrid, a coastal region that is app. 30 km long.
The Ohrid lake is 700 m above sea level facing the massive
mounting Galicica witch is making a natural barrier between
the Prespan and Ohrid lake. Hearsay is that these two lakes
are connected under the big mountain Galicica.
In the Ohrid lake over 70 species of fishes found there
home, among them the famous Ohrid trout and Ohrid eel. The
greatest depth of the lake is 285m and the visibility reaches
40 m. The river Beli Drim empties into the lake, while the
river Crni Drim connects the Ohrid lake with the Black Sea.
Ohrid is a very old city and a well-known tourist destination.
Around Ohrid was build over 365 Orthodox churches. Today only a small percent of them are still existing.
Our divers had the opportunity to visit the fortress of
Samuilo that has a wonderful view on the lake. This year
the restoration of the Ohrid amphitheater was finished.
Now there are concerts organized in this beautiful acoustical
arena.
(Amphitheater at night).
During our visit the famous Macedonian music star Vlatko
Stefanovski and his band "Leb i Sol" had a concert. In the
Ohrid lake has been discovered an ancient town (in a depth
of app. 8m). This city is now well known as "Micun grad"
after the diver who discovered the town. We regret that
we were not aloud to dive on this site because the archeological
examinations were not finished yet. During our stay in Ohrid
we had the opportunity to meet Mr. Milutin Sekuloski who
discovered the under water city and make some dives with
him.
Milutin arranged a unforgettable dive trip to a local dive.
The accommodation was in a so-called Universe hotel near the beach, app. 6-kilometer from the center of the town. A nice park and threes around the hotel made our stay more pleasant. The manager of the hotel Mr. Pero made all our wishes come trough so we will use this opportunity to thank Mr. Pero and his hotel staff.
Mr. Cele took care of the well being of our divers and fed
us like nobody before. After this excursion every diver
gained a few pounds of weight. Being able to chose between
various Macedonian specialties it was weary hard to withstand
the challenge.
We had apartments with 2 or 4 beds each with a separate
bathroom. We had a great time The dives were nice although
not weary various.
We used the possibility to make as many deep dives as possible
because the sites for this kind of diving were relatively
near the shore.
We dove twice a day. We also made one night dive at witch we saw many small fishes.
 |

At the depth of 73.9m we stayed 5 minutes. |
Diving at such a depth is weary dangerous so it should be
not don with out a very good reason. The wetter God was
on our side although it was the second half of August.
The nice wetter helped us to accumulate energy for a long
cold winter in Belgrade. We left Ohrid with nice memories
and a hope that this will not be the last visit to this
nice place and his friendly people.
Join us in our next exciting adventure in the exploration
of the wonderful silent underwater world.
